Prologue: Lic. Herón García-Martínez. Series: Colección Testimonios, No. 1. Publisher: H. Ayuntamiento del Municipio de Puebla, Programa de Atención a la Cultura Popular, Puebla, Mexico. Description: 196 pp., 16 photographs, four maps, one illustration, 17 tables, three annotated bibliographies.

Summary. In the past, the Puebla Valley town of Totimehuacán (Mexico), served variously as the capital of a prehispanic Nahua city-state, the seat of a Franciscan mission, and a prized military target in various wars.

This book traces 2,700 years of local history, from the Pre-Classic ceremonial center (c. 695 B.C.) to the arrival of factories, tourism and suburban housing developments in the late 20th century. It also examines all major aspects of community life today.

The study incorporates a wide range of data sources -- archeology, native codices, archives and oral history -- as well as 22 years of ethnographic fieldwork (1978-2000) by the author.

In comparison to the first edition (1995), this revised, second edition presents fuller coverage of the colonial period, a new section on contemporary social organization (household, kinship, marriage, etc.), more details on popular Catholicism, plus updated photos and appendices.
